Preparing and serving food at Haven from Hunger

We will be preparing a meal at 9:00 a.m. on Sunday, January 8th to be served to those in need at Haven From Hunger in Peabody on Friday, January 13th.

Feeding the hungry is one of the most important outreach ministries of Trinity Church.  Over the years we have been involved in feeding programs at Nike Village, Bread and Roses, Haven from Hunger, and LifeBridge (formerly Salem Mission).  This wonderful work is open to persons of all ages - children included!

In this difficult economy, the need for help feeding the poor has grown tremendously so, moving forward, we need to work as a committee.  There are three distinct roles for volunteers to play.  With enough people helping, we can expect to participate every two months or so.  The tasks are as follows:

1.  Shopping for food. We will  use four recipes in rotation.  They are available in the Trinity kitchen and below under "RECIPES".  The shopper  will buy the listed ingredients and make sure they are available in the kitchen on the designated cooking Sunday.  Shoppers will be reimbursed for their purchases.  Stop in at the office for a green reimbursement form, complete it, and give to Lynn Annen or Jo Barrett.  A Check will be mailed to you.

  1. RECIPES

2.  Cooking.  Cooks will meet on the designated Sunday in the Trinity kitchen.  Cooks should expect to spend an hour to an hour and a half to prepare the main dish for the meal.  We will follow the recipes and freeze the food for the next serving date.

3.  Serving.  2 - 4 persons are needed to handle serving at Haven.  One of the servers should be familiar with the procedures at Haven and will be the informal 'leader' of the serving team.  On the Wednesday night before the serving date, the leader will alert Jo or Lynn of the need to remove the food from the freezer and place it in the refrigerator.  An email/phone message will do!  This person will then email or call Lynn on the Friday morning to remind her to put the food in the oven according to the time/temperature listed on the recipe sheet.  The team of servers should arrive at Trinity by 4:00 p.m. on serving day, pick up the hot food, breads and desserts, and bring it to Haven from Hunger, 71 Wallis St., Peabody. Serving at Haven begins at 5:00 p.m.  Servers are typically finished by 6:00 p.m.

We are still working to develop our teams for the feeding program, so please think about how you could participate.  Contact Meg Black or Jo Barrett for information or to volunteer.  This is a wonderful, fulfilling, and important ministry!
